Share price of Bharti Airtel declines as promoter ICIL offloads 0.84% stake

Bharti Airtel's share price slightly declined on Tuesday after its promoter-group entity, Indian Continent Investment Limited (ICIL), sold a 0.84% stake in the company. The telecom giant's stock dropped by 1.15% to ₹1,656.15 per share on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

On February 18, 2025, Airtel verified in an official exchange filing that ICIL had sold 5.11 crore equity shares for ₹8,485.11 crore in a market transaction.

Bharti Telecom Strengthens Holding

To balance the transaction, Bharti Telecom—the promoter of Airtel—stepped in and acquired 1.20 crore shares, which accounts for 24% of the total sale by ICIL. The company emphasized strategically distributing the allocation to key global and domestic institutional investors.

This move follows Bharti Telecom's acquisition of a 1.2% stake in Airtel (7.31 crore shares) from ICIL in November 2024.

"With this, Bharti Telecom now holds 40.47% of Airtel, reinforcing its previously stated intent of strengthening its position as the principal vehicle to hold a controlling stake in Airtel, remaining focused on gradually increasing its stake while maintaining a prudent leverage profile as it does so," the company stated.

Bharti Airtel's Shareholding Pattern

As of the December 2024 quarter, Bharti Airtel's shareholding pattern is as follows:

  • Promoter and Promoter Group: Owned 53.11% of the company
  • Public shareholders: Owned a 46.81% stake

Bharti Airtel Stock Performance

Despite today's dip, Bharti Airtel has delivered strong returns over the past year:

  • 4% Year-To-Date (YTD) Growth in 2025
  • 8% gain in the past three months
  • 12% increase over six months
  • 48% rise in the last year
  • 114% surge over two years, making it a multi-bagger stock

Current Market Status

On February 18, 2025, at 10:25 AM, Bharti Airtel's stock was down 0.98% at ₹1,659.20 per share on the BSE, with a market valuation of roughly ₹9.47 lakh crore.

Conclusion

Bharti Airtel's stock reacted negatively to ICIL's 0.84% stake sale, but Bharti Telecom's acquisition of 1.20 crore shares reinforces its long-term commitment to the company. While the stock witnessed a temporary dip, its strong historical performance and strategic investments suggest a potential positive long-term outlook.
